Signs worth noticing

Children do not always know how to describe blurry vision. Sometimes the first clues are small behaviors that repeat themselves.

Common signs

  • Moving closer to the TV, a screen, or a book.
  • Difficulty seeing the board at school or signs in the distance.
  • Squinting to sharpen the image.
  • Headaches, tired eyes, or eye rubbing after school.
  • Choosing to sit closer or avoiding activities that require distance vision.

What may show up at school?

Difficulty seeing the board can look like poor concentration, slower copying, or repeated requests to sit closer. When distance vision may be involved, an eye exam is a sensible first step.

When should you arrange an eye exam?

Consider an exam when signs repeat, when your child reports blurred distance vision, or when myopia runs in the family. Even without obvious symptoms, periodic eye exams are important during childhood.

Sudden vision loss, eye pain, trauma, or unusual symptoms should be assessed promptly by an appropriate medical professional.
